Purpose of this site
The purpose of the simplescattering.com website is to allow the public distribution of small-angle scattering data collected by scientific researchers or synchrotron beamline staff members. This includes small-angle X-ray or neutron scattering along with associated supplemental data, supporting materials and metadata for educational and informational purposes.
Accounts and membership
If you create an account on the Website, you are responsible for maintaining the security of your account and you are fully responsible for all activities that occur under the account and any other actions taken in connection with it. We may monitor and review new accounts before you may sign in and start using the Services. During review, we may prevent you from using some of the Services. Providing false contact information of any kind may result in the termination of your account. You must immediately notify us of any unauthorized uses of your account or any other breaches of security. We will not be liable for any acts or omissions by you, including any damages of any kind incurred as a result of such acts or omissions. We may suspend, disable, or delete your account (or any part thereof) if we determine that you have violated any provision of this Agreement or that your conduct or content would tend to damage our reputation and goodwill. If we delete your account for the foregoing reasons, you may not re-register for our Services. We may delete inactive accounts. We also reserve the right to delete your account, without notice, from the site at any time without liability and for any reason. We may block your email address and Internet protocol address to prevent further registration. You may delete your account and data at any time, or contact us to do so.
User content
We do not own any data, information or material (collectively, “Content”) that you submit on the Website in the course of using the Service. You shall have sole responsibility for the accuracy, quality, integrity, legality, reliability, appropriateness, and right to use of all submitted Content. It is our policy that all Content uploaded by you is to be free of all copyright restrictions and made fully and freely available for non-commercial and/or commercial use, therefore any data you upload must not have any proprietary, monetary or intellectual property value to you. There is the possibility that Content that is still in draft or unpublished mode may be hacked, intercepted or downloaded by unauthorized individuals or other entities. We will not be responsible or liable for any damages arising from the use of the Content that you have submitted. It is against our policy for You to submit or upload Content that have personal identifiable information that identify patients or persons from which samples were derived. We do not solicit nor do we wish to receive any confidential, secret or proprietary information or other material from you through the Website, the contact form, or by email, or in any other way. Any Content, data, information, creative works, demos, ideas, suggestions, concepts, methods, systems, designs, plans, techniques or other materials submitted, uploaded or sent to the Website will be deemed not to be confidential. We may monitor and review the Content on the Website submitted or created using our Services by you. With your permission, you may allow beamline staff to upload your data on your behalf and edit your content, however the terms above apply. You grant us permission to access, copy, distribute, store, transmit, reformat, display and perform the Content of your user account solely as required for the purpose of providing the Services to you. Without limiting any of those representations or warranties, we have the right, though not the obligation, to, in our own sole discretion, refuse or remove any Content that, in our reasonable opinion, violates any of our policies or is in any way harmful or objectionable. Unless specifically permitted by you, your use of the Website and Services does not grant us the license to use, reproduce, adapt, modify, publish or distribute the Content created by you or stored in your user account for commercial, marketing or any similar purpose.
Crediting researchers
Upon using any data obtained from this site, it is appreciated that the Researchers (Authors) are given credit. A code is generated for each dataset which may be used to identify a dataset when giving credit, such as "Simple Scattering code: XSABC123"
Backups
This site is intended for sharing of data, and not storing data for any other purpose, including personal storage. We perform regular backups of the Website and its Content, however, these backups are for our own administrative purposes only and are in no way guaranteed. You are responsible for maintaining your own backups of your data. We may remove data that is not published in a timely manner. We do not provide any sort of compensation for lost or incomplete data in the event that backups do not function properly. We will do our best to ensure complete and accurate backups, but assume no responsibility for this duty. We may take the simplescattering.com website down at any time, and at which time, you will lose all of your data.
Third party services
The website is hosted on Heroku, a service operated by Salesforce.com, Inc. Heroku’s infrastructure runs on Amazon Web Services (AWS). We also use AWS to store uploaded content. These third-party services are used solely to operate the platform and store content as part of our services. We are not responsible for their uptime, availability, or policies, though we choose providers that meet industry standards for reliability and security. We will assume no liability nor responsibility to any person or entity with respect to any loss or damage related directly or indirectly to the data, content or information by third-party services.
